In a recent podcast episode I did with Dan Gasby, husband to late wife B. Smith, he said the following about kids in the Hamptons:
“Kids that live out here have no social skills. They were raised by werewolves or vampires and their attitudes and how they act in restaurants or on the street. Entitlement. They're weak. They never had to hustle. They don't know how to say hello or to look you in the eye. They'll fail upward, because mommy and daddy will provide them with the tether, you know, the umbilical cord of success and money that they have. They couldn't work hard. Lucky sperm club. They've never been punched in the face, so they don't understand what a fight is really like, but they can get uppity and angry and arrogant. That's one of the worst things that I've seen out here.”
To which I replied, “Not all of us.”
The full podcast episode is out now: Youtube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts.
To me that wasn't a fair assessment. Instead of explaining how that's not right, I took the idea to the Southampton community for their input and made a “Reactions” episode to the podcast.
The answers from Southampton locals can be summarized as follows:
The "snobby rich kids" in the Hamptons aren't locals; they're Manhattan kids visiting for the weekend from the Hamptons.
Work ethics and being rich are not mutually exclusive (this is debatable, but in the context of the video it made sense), so saying they are mutually exclusive is absurd.
Same goes for having money and having manners are not mutually exclusive.
There are rich, snobby kids in every area of the world.
What do you think? Are there things not mentioned here that you would like everyone to know? Please share them in the comments below so that we can continue this conversation. Thank you for your participation.
